PIKEVILLE – Monday was a case of another day, another blowout for UPIKE men’s soccer who defeated Hiwassee, 7-0 to extend its current win streak to five matches. With the win, UPIKE moves to 7-3 on the season and sets a new record for most wins in a season.
The Bears had control from the start of the match and scored early and often to distance themselves from the Tigers. Aaron Aven scored twice in the first 10 minutes to set the pace and Pikeville went on to score five times before the halftime whistle. Rze Culbreath scored in between a pair of goals from Tindur Asbjornsson to round out the first half scoring.
Hiwassee stepped their game up a bit in the second half, as well as a strengthening rain storm on the field, which limited UPIKE’s scoring chances to just four shots on goal, down from six in the first half.
However, two shots still snuck through, one of which came from Billy Quiteno who delivered a bouncing corner so hard that it went straight through the keeper’s hands. Daniel Bosse-Joesph finished the scoring in the final minutes with his second goal of the season.
Anibal Navarro (70 minutes) and Kaseem Wedderburn (20 minutes) combined to stop three Hiwassee shots in the shutout effort.
