LEBANON, Tenn. – The injury bug-plagued UPIKE volleyball team just couldn’t find enough offense on Saturday to get the job done, getting swept by Cumberland, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14).
Because of the long list of injuries, Pikeville was limited to just four hitters overall and only two outside hitters, which limited the Bears offensive options. UPIKE was held to a .095 hit percentage in the match.
Cassie Jones had a match-high nine kills, while Amanda Gooding and Hunter Clewis each had seven.
Each set started almost identical with Cumberland building up a quick lead. However, the Bears came back to take a 15-13 lead in the second before the Phoenix went on a 7-2 run late to take the set. UPIKE hit .200 in the second frame, its best mark of the day.
The Bears stuck around early in the third set but Cumberland went on a 9-0 run complete with three service aces to take a 20-10 lead before closing out the match soon after.
