PIKEVILLE – UPIKE’s magic ran out on Wednesday as it took its first loss in two weeks, losing to Brescia, 3-0.
After a scoreless first half, it didn’t take long for Brescia to find the back of the net in the second when Milton Garcia scored in the 47th minute off a pretty lob pass from Kyle Bleidt. Brescia’s lead doubled seven minutes later when Jean Laurent beat Anibal Navarro.
Pikeville got 13 shots off in the match and a lot of those shots went just wide. Two Bears shots were just a hair away from going in but glanced off the crossbar. One crossbar shot came off a scissor kick from reigning player of the week Eric Bernabue and the other was an Aaron Aven header off a corner kick.
Fabian Torres added the third Brescia goal in the 83rd minute to seal the game.
It was a hard-fought match that went late into the night on Wednesday, but UPIKE women’s soccer eventually lost to Brescia, 4-1.
The Bears placed more shots on goal than the Bearcats 7-5, but Brescia’s chances were stronger and easier to score on.
The teams went into the halftime break tied 1-1, but Brescia took control in the second half to pull away.
Nicole Gray scored first for Brescia in the eighth minute, but Haley Fitzpatrick scored her first career goal from the top of the box 22 minutes later to even the scoring.
Rebecca Chin bookended the second half scoring between a goal from Erin McGuire to round out the scoring.
Fitzpatrick, Reagan Bridge and Skylar Chapman all had two shots on goal for the Bears.

UPIKE hits the road over the weekend for another men’s-women’s doubleheader with Midway. The women’s match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and the men’s at 4:30 p.m.
