Maynard, UPIKE take title at Alice Lloyd Invitational

PRESTONSBURG – For the second time in three days, Roger Maynard is walking off the course as a tournament champion. However, this time around the UPIKE men’s golf team is leaving with a title as well.

UPIKE earned its first team victory of the season on Tuesday, claiming the Alice Lloyd Invitational title with a team 606 30-over-par.

The win didn’t come without a bit of dramatics, though. After finishing day one with a nine-stroke lead over Rio Grande, the RedStorm came on strong and made a comeback to take a one-lead as a team late in the day.

Only Blake Moody was left on the course for the Bears, who had struggled Tuesday despite firing off a 1-under 71 the day before. He then eagled the final par-4 hole to leapfrog the RedStorm for the title. That eagle kept Moody in a tie for third at 6-over, good enough to make the all-tournament team.

On the individual side, Roger Maynard had no such dramatics with his victory. The junior shot back-to-back 1-under 71 rounds to win by five strokes over Aaron Minor of Alice Lloyd. Maynard and Moody were the only participants to shoot under par rounds in the tournament. In addition to this being Maynard’s second consecutive title, this marks his third career individual win.

Dustyn Reinstetle finished 10th at 11-over and Trey Isenberg finished tied for 12th at 16-over to round out the Bears.
