PHELPS – Phelps’ defense came to the rescue for an offense that shot itself in the foot time after time.
When the Hornets walked off the rain-soaked turf at Marty Casey Stadium the defensive unit had pitched its second straight shutout, a 26-0 win over Sheldon Clark.
Phelps, now 2-0, mustered enough offense in the first half to build its lead against the Cardinals, who dropped to 1-2.
Quarterback Garrett Clevenger tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Dominick Francis who managed to slip behind the SC defender with 7 minutes, 28 seconds left in the opening period. Francis rushed 11 times for 160 yards and two scores while finishing up with 33 yards receiving.
The Hornets added three second-quarter scores, two of those on runs of one and two yards by Zack Ramey.
Francis closed out the scoring when he took the handoff and eluded the SC defense and raced 54 yards for the game’s final points.
Phelps will travel to Jackson City (1-2) and Sheldon Clark will host Mount View, W.Va. (2-0) this Friday.
