Belfry, Letcher, Paintsville, SC post volleyball wins

Belfry, Letcher Central, Paintsville and Lawrence County opened the high school volleyball season with wins on the court Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Sheldon Clark rolled to its  second straight win, defeating Phelps.

The Lady Pirates defeated Prestonsburg, 3-0, winning 25-7, 25-19 and 25-14.

Elyssa Stanley had 10 kills and 10 aces while Emily Deaton finished with 29 digs and three aces. Deaton now has 1,000-plus digs for her career. Ariel Mounts led the Lady Pirates in assists.

The Lady Cougars topped Harlan, 3-0, taking sets  of 21-8, 21-6 and 25-17.

The Lady Tigers downed Shelby Valley, 3-0, with sets of 25-10, 25-5 and 25-14.

Megan Taylor had 21 kills and eight blocks while Kaitlyn Newsome had 12 serving aces. Lindsey Nelson added 28 assists and six blocks and Anna James finished with 12 digs and one ace.

The Lady Bulldogs knocked off Holy Family, 3-0, winning 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16.

Lexi Workman and Lillian Kinser led in kills while Kaylee Ison and Kinser were tops in serving aces along with Harmonne Lemaster.

Ellan Sparks led in assists and Abby Akers in digs.

The Lady Cardinals won the most competitive match over Phelps, 3-2. The sets were 25-13, 25-18, 19-25, 20-25 and 15-9.

Kira Osborn had 10 serving aces while Kristen Isaac and Maddie Thompson had four kills each. Thompson added five blocks.

Lila Spaulding totaled 11 assists and Jena Grayson finished with 11 assists.
