COLUMN: Get children involved in sports

We all have a love for sports, whether playing, coaching or watching.

During a time when social media has taken over the world, it’s important as parents and adults we encourage children to take time to be involved in sports.

Many children now days only have movement in their hands – surfing the internet, social media or playing video games.

Sadly, many teenagers are not physically able to be on a team. Numbers show that only half participate in athletics on some level.

For those who have never tried, I encourage you to get involved for several reasons. It can help you to become healthier, smarter and so on.

Playing sports isn’t easy. I know that first hand. It takes hard work and dedication. It’s 90 percent mental in the long run compared to 10 percent physical.

Children involved in sports, whether it’s football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, track and field or cheerleading, show greater attention when it comes to school and family.

The game has a way of teaching you to play fairly and respect players on opposing teams. It helps you to make friends and share so many memories.

Sports teaches us to focus, manage time and accomplish short and long-term goals.

Playing sports bonds so many people. It brings communities together for the biggest social gathering in every small town across the country.

Sports helps develop self confidence when it comes to college and professional careers. It creates great leadership skills and better work ethic.

A high school coach recently told me something that I hadn’t given much thought to until now. He said as coaches we need half these kids on the team. The other half need us. That’s so true.

See you under the lights!!
