Meet Pike Central head coach Derrick Newsome

Will begin fifth year with Lady Hawks

Previously served as head coach for one season at Allen Central

Assistant coach for one year at Betsy Layne

What is your coaching philosophy? “It’s pretty basic:  We’re never going to give up regardless of the circumstances; we’re going to give 100 percent all the time; and instill that determination to get to the top. By doing this I’ve helped make a difference in whatever he/she does later in life. I coach because I have a passion for the gm. I place high priorities on faith, discipline, family, and a competitive attitude. We close each practice by sitting down in a circle and discussing what’s going on in each players life, followed with a prayer. We also pray before and after each gm. I got to give a lot of credit to Dave Hammond for being such a positive influence on myself and my players the last couple seasons (results speak for themselves). I was very lucky to play under William Newsome Jr. (and get mentored by) and learn the importance and the value of discipline and structure. Coach would always tell me that kids want discipline (previous players would always come back years later and thank him). We also try to make it a family at PC (my kids always have pregame meals together, that makes me very happy); and lastly a priority to just compete. Life is not always fair but be willing to battle through those obstacles in life.”
