EKB Sports gearing up for high school football

Wow, we are now just seven weeks away from kicking off the high school football season.

For me, here I am still chasing those Friday Night Lights 43+ years later.

This is without question the most wonderful time of the year, especially if you are a fan of high school sports.

The first high school game I covered as a photographer/reporter was Gilbert and Iaeger, one of the fiercest rivals in southern West Virginia. I rode along with reporter Rick Flowers, a great friend of mine, who, like myself, was a graduate of Man High School.

We spent so many Friday nights on the road. It was then I realized this was my dream job.

This fall things will be different for me as East Kentucky Broadcasting’s sports director.

In just over two weeks, our team will make our way around area football camps to interview coaches on the upcoming season.

Having launched our new EBKSports.com website allows me to continue to write stories on area schools. It also gives me the opportunity to be involved now on the radio and TV side of things full time.

When the Medical Leader ceased operations earlier this year I was at a crossroads.

One thing I knew for sure, God would open another door for me.

Being around the players and having the opportunity to report on their accomplishments can’t be matched.

When the football is placed on the kicking tee come Aug. 17 another high school season will begin. Friday nights are truly special. Anyone who is a fan of the game understands what it means to the people of our region.

Football is king in the mountains. It has been for a long time. We are blessed with talented players, coaches and teams.

There are 19 high school teams ready to provide us with thrills and memories of a lifetime.

Yes, high school football will soon be back and our EKB Sports crew is glad to be a small part of it. Every late Friday night is rewarded by being able to showcase our student-athletes.

I just hope many of you get the same satisfaction of watching and cheering on your favorite teams as EKB Sports enjoys covering it for you.

Who will emerge as football king in the mountains?

Only time will tell.
