State Tournament Recap: Tigers fall in quarterfinals

LEXINGTON – Highlands starter Hunter Dreves held Paintsville to just a pair of hits as the Bluebirds eliminated the Tigers, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the state baseball tournament played at Whitaker Park Ballpark on June 9.

Ben Daniels and Matt Baldwin singled for Paintsville’s only hits.

Tanner Smith was the starter and losing pitcher for the           Tigers, who finished 26-13.

LEXINGTON – Paintsville’s Seth Williams blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and starting pitcher Mason Moore scattered two hits over seven innings as the Tigers opened play in the state baseball tournament with a 3-1 win over Christian County at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on June 8.

Moore, who improved to 7-0 this season, retired the final 15 batters he faced and 18 of 20 to help Paintsville advanced to the quarterfinals against Highlands.

Williams accounted for the game’s final run when he was hit by a pitch in the sixth inning, stole second and third ahead of scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.

Ben Daniels had the only other hit for the Tigers, now 26-12.
