he National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced on Thursday that five University of Pikeville baseball student-athletes have been named 2018 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Three of the Bears’ honorees are seniors, including pitcher Max Hall, shortstop Matt Peterson and outfielder Daniel Sterenberg. The two junior award winners are catcher Luke Hartlage and first baseman Jay Vincent.
For Sterenberg, this is his second NAIA Scholar-Athlete award, while the other four are receiving their first honor.
In order to be nominated by an institution’s sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer.
UPIKE finished with a 27-23 record, matching third-year head coach Jim Pitt’s best mark for wins which he also tallied in 2017.
Peterson, Hartlage and Vincent were named All Mid-South Conference as well. Peterson led all conference hitters with a .431 average, Hartlage drove in 23 runs with a .260 average and Vincent hit .324 with 36 RBIs.
