PAINTSVILLE – Pike County Central saw a three-run lead slip away following a long rain delay in the top of the fifth inning against Shelby Valley only to rally in the home half of the frame to regain the lead and hold on for a 7-5 win in the opening round game of the 15th Region softball tournament played on Memorial Day at Johnson Central.
Winning pitcher Haley Howell, who struck out seven, knocked in a pair of runs along with Skylar Stumbo as the Lady Hawks improved to 24-12 and advanced to the semifinals against Lawrence County.Sydnee Lowe collected a pair of hits.
Angel Newsome paced the Lady Bat Kats, who finished 12-14, with three hits and Taylor Newsome added two and drove in one run.
Lawrence County advanced with a 6-0 win over Paintsville.
