Fields accepts position at Trinity

NEWTOWN – Former Mingo County head football coach Joey Fields will be the first person to tell you it wasn’t easy stepping away from leading the Miners.

While serving as offensive coordinator under then head coach Yogi Kinder he helped guide the program to an undefeated season and first-ever state championship in 2016.

Fields said he simply felt the time was right after one season and stressed Mingo County will always be home.

The former Matewan High School standout will step into his new role this fall as a member of Louisville Trinity’s football staff.

Fields said he looks forward to being part of such a storybook program at Trinity.

He joined the Mingo Central program nine years ago after the consolidation of Williamson, Burch, Matewan and Gilbert high schools.

Mingo Central recorded its second straight undefeated regular season in 2017. The Miners were knocked out of the Class AA playoffs by Fairmont Senior, the team they beat in the 2016 championship game at Wheeling Island Stadium.
