PIKEVILLE – Shelby Valley survived a sluggish first-half performance to pull away from Phelps after the break to earn a 59-34 victory in the opening round of the boys’ 15th Region Tournament played at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center Feb. 25.
The Wildcats, now 28-6, held a slim 21-15 halftime lead before outscoring the Hornets (15-15) by a 25-8 margin in the third period to push their lead to 46-23.
Cameron Worrix paced Valley with a game-high 24 points while Cody Potter finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Orbie McPeek added 10.
Trey Francis led the Hornets with 15 points while Jason Casey chipped in eight.
The Wildcats will face Johnson Central in the semifinals this coming Friday night.
